BIRDS: Great Tits Nesting in a Bottle Kiln (30th May 2014)

During a visit to Apedale Country Park, I was sitting in the outdoor area of the cafe at the Heritage Centre when I spotted a great tit carrying grubs. He then disappeared in an ornamental bottle kiln. I sat and watched as a pair went in and out of the bottle kiln quite regularly carrying food. It was clear that they had made a nest in this kiln, which are highly associated with the Stoke on Trent and Staffordshire area. Quite a fitting post for my Tails of Staffordshire blog!

Listening closely, the sound of great tit chicks could clearly be heard inside the kiln.
