Spring has to be my favourite time of the year. The evenings get lighter, the days are longer and amphibians and reptiles begin to come out of hibernation.
We took a visit to Apedale Country park, one of my favourite nature reserves. The reserve has a small pond quite close to the heritage centre and car park. This small, quiet pond is quite unexplored by visitors which is a real shame as it holds so much life in such a small space. A couple of years ago I saw my first grass snake here which was a real treat! John spotted a grass snake on our visit, but he was hidden under quite a bit of greenery to get a photograph. But we were also rewarded with sights of toads including plenty of mating toads, frogs and even smooth newts!
