A trio of migrants at Coombes Valley, Staffordshire, 14th May 2016

A trip to RSPB Coombes Valley in Staffordshire proved to be very successful. We went in search of three migrant birds, the redstart, pied flycatcher and spotted flycatcher and managed to spot all three!

RSPB Coombes Valley is only a 20 minute drive from where we live and yet we rarely visit this reserve. Boasting over 4,000 species of wildlife I’m not quite sure why we don’t visit this reserve more often.

We arrived at 11am and after spotting the trio of migrants, we ended our visit at 8pm doing a spot of pond dipping where we saw plenty of pond snails, pond skaters, dragonfly larvae and common newts. Unfortunately we didn’t have a net, but this empty grape container worked a treat!
