We have often been on the lookout for a great grey shrike, but somehow luck has never been on our side with this particular bird. We had heard that one had been spotted in Derbyshire, so like most weekends we went in search of it. Driving up and down the roads, I saw a flutter of wings to my left. It was him! He had landed on the tree next to us. Of course, the process of reversing the car and rolling down the passenger window as quietly and carefully as we could was near impossible. The bird flew away. But not too far luckily. He landed firstly in a tree followed by a clear-felled area of forestry. A typical hunting ground for a shrike. They perch high up in trees and on fenceposts in order to hunt.
