The Pallid Harrier and Short-eared Owl

Name: Pallid Harrier and Short-eared Owl

Place: Forest of Bowland

Date: 6th May 2017

Time: 5.00pm

Weather: Cloudy and chilly

Hearing that a pallid harrier had been spotted at the Forest of Bowland, we took an hour drive there followed by a very long, hilly walk. We got to the top out of breath, a little chilly but feeling optimistic. Unfortunately, the harrier had not been seen for a while. Sitting on the hills we scanned the area. Sitting in the bitter cold for an hour and a half paid off. He appeared soaring over the hills and sky dancing over our heads.

Later that day we spotted a Short-eared owl flying over the hills and then, to our surprise, attacking a grouse! We were very lucky to catch the owl and very startled grouse on camera…
